I rent a chair in a salon in Newcastle and I'm wondering if I can use Jane App separately from the main salon's system. The salon owner uses something different and I don't want to confuse clients. Can you set up Jane App as an individual without it being tied to the building's address? Has anyone done this as a chair renter?

I tested Square Appointments and Jane App side by side for a month. Square Appointments won on price, Jane App won on features. For a solo beauty salon just starting out, Square Appointments's free plan is hard to argue with. You can always switch later once you know exactly what you need.

My clients were pretty resistant at first — a few of them are older and not very tech-savvy. What helped was walking them through the booking link in person the first time. Once they'd done it once they were completely fine. Now I get booking confirmations at 11pm from people I would have thought would never manage it.

The Instagram booking integration on Jane App was a bit fiddly to set up but it does work. The issue is usually the Facebook Business account connection — make sure your Instagram is properly linked to a Facebook page first, then the Jane App integration finds it straight away.

The waiting list feature on Shedul is genuinely good — better than any other system I've tried. When a cancellation comes in it automatically notifies the next person on the waiting list. Has filled three last-minute slots for me this month alone.

I chair-rent and I use Vagaro completely separately from the main salon. You just set your own location as a general Manchester address or your own mobile setup. Clients book with you specifically, not the salon. Works really well and the salon owner doesn't even see my diary.

For deposits specifically, Appointy is really smooth. The client gets a card payment screen as part of the booking flow — it doesn't feel like a separate step or like you're being suspicious of them. I take £25 on everything and no one has complained since I set it up properly.

For multi-staff Timely is excellent. Each person has their own colour-coded calendar, you can set individual hours and services, and clients book with a specific person or with 'any available' if you prefer. I've got four staff on it and it's really simple to manage from the dashboard.
