How do you charge for a no-show if you don't have a deposit?

don't take deposits currently so when someone doesn't show i have no way to charge. thinking about card-on-file so i can charge if they ghost the appointment. has anyone done this and how did clients take it? feels necessary but also a bit of an awkward conversation.
