Is there a polite way to quietly remove a difficult client?

have a client who is consistently draining — not abusive, just high-maintenance in a way that takes disproportionate energy. always extra requests, always something to comment on, always runs long. how do others move someone off the books without an explicit uncomfortable conversation?
