Friends and family as clients — the discount and reliability problem

how does everyone handle the friends and family situation? i love mine but they're also my most unreliable clients. always late, always want exceptions to the cancellation policy. incredibly difficult when it's your cousin and you see her at christmas. i've started being more firm but it still feels uncomfortable. is there a way to handle this without it becoming a whole family drama?
