Deposits before booking — coming round to the idea

i know barbers who flatly refuse to book anyone without a deposit now. used to think it felt too formal for the kind of relationship you have with a regular, but honestly the time wasting has got bad enough that i'm coming round to it. how do you handle deposits with existing clients who've never paid one before? do you just introduce it quietly or make a point of explaining why?
