Deposits — at time of booking or closer to the appointment?

deposit timing question — do you collect it at the point of booking or closer to the appointment? i've been doing it at booking but had a client say it felt a bit too upfront. didn't lose her but it made me second-guess myself. what's the norm? and does timing actually affect whether people actually pay or not?
