Charging deposits for first-time clients — worth it or does it put people off?

been thinking about charging deposits for first-time clients. probably half my no-shows are people who found me online, never been in before, and have zero commitment to the booking. would £10–15 upfront feel too off-putting? i don't want to lose potential regulars but i also can't keep carrying the cost of empty chairs. curious what others are doing — and whether it actually made a difference to your no-show rate.
