Card on file vs upfront deposit — which do clients accept more willingly?

looking at two approaches. take £50 upfront as a deposit. or store card details and only charge on a late cancellation. the second feels more client-friendly but requires trust with card data. what's been your experience in terms of client acceptance of each model?
