Card details at booking, charge on cancellation — the model that seems to work

we went back and forth on whether to take card details at booking or just bill on the day. we landed on collecting details upfront but only charging for cancellations within 24 hours. it's worked out well — feels fair without being punishing. what model do other small clinics use and have any of you lost significant patients by introducing any kind of deposit or card-hold policy?
